Ninguna de estas fotos podría estar colgada en la pared de una galería, ninguna de estas fotos sería la tapa de una revista, pero todas y cada una de ellas tienen algo en común, son instantes que verdaderamente le importan al autor, son rasgos de un momento que no se va a repetir jamás, son las fotos favoritas de los que contribuyen con Romka, y ese es el criterio de selección para que terminen impresas en la revista.

None of these pictures may be hung on the wall of a gallery, none of these pictures would be no magazine cover, but each and every one of them has something in common, are moments that really matter to the author, a moment that will never repeat, all of those are the romka magazine contributors favorite photos, and that is why those pictures are printed in the magazine.
Una revista que se aleja de las influencias de la moda, y propone una relación más auténtica con la fotografía, incluso con la edición y la publicación de material.
Mucha gente solamente muestra las fotos que se parecen a lo que ven que sucede ahí afuera, pero las fotos favoritas de alguien siempre van a significar algo importante, van a ser más auténticas, pueden decirte mucho más sobre la persona que las tomó.
A magazine that moves away from the influences of fashion and proposes a more authentic relationship with photography, also with editing and publishing. Many people only shows photos that look like what is happening out there, but someone's favorites are always going to mean something important, they will be more authentic, can tell you much more about the person who took them.

Mientras trabaja en un nuevo proyecto online super secreto, y a poco tiempo del lanzamiento del séptimo número de romka, hablé con él para que me cuente un poco más sobre la revista.
While he works on a new super secret project online, and after the launch of the seventh issue of Romka, I spoke with him to know a little more about the magazine.
¿Qué quiere decir romka?
Cuando tenía más o menos 16 le prometí a mi mejor amiga Roma, una chica polaca, dedicarle mi primer libro de fotos. "Romka" es el diminutivo en polaco de Roma, entonces le dediqué todo el proyecto a ella.
What does the word romka means?
When I was about 16, I promised my then best friend Roma, a Polish girl, to dedicate my first photo book to her. "Romka" is the Polish belittlement of "Roma", so I dedicated the whole project to her instead.
Empezaste el proyecto mientras estabas estudiando fotografía, me contás que ahora la estás dejando, qué está pasando?
Me parece muy agotador, no puedo ir por ahí tomando fotos, me siento como si tuviera que escurrir mi alma y hacer algo significativo y extremadamente personal,
Todavía me encanta la fotografía, pero me parece que tengo que tomarme un largo descanso para ver en qué estoy interesado realmente.
Es duro ser sincero sin resultar pretencioso… estoy seguro que suena bastante pretencioso cuando digo que trabajar en un proyecto de fotografía siempre me tira en un pozo de depresión, pero desafortunadamente así es como es. Tal vez lo vuelva a intentar el año que viene o el próximo.
When you started this project you was studing photography, now you tell me you are quiting it, why?
Because I find it way to exhausting. I can't just go around and take photos, I always feel like I have to pour my soul out and make something meaningful and extremely personal. I still love photography, but I think I just need a long break to find out what it is that I'm truly interested in. It's hard to be sincere without seeming pretentious. I'm sure it sounds very pretentious when I say that working on a photography project always throws me in a pit of depression, but unfortunately that's just how it is. Maybe I'll try it again in 2013. Or 2014.
¿Estás viviendo en Leipzig (Alemania), naciste allí?
Yo nací en el bosque, en un pequeño pueblo rodeado por un denso bosque de abetos. Lo odiaba mucho cuando pasé por la pubertad y siempre soñaba con la gran ciudad. Ahora que vivo en una ciudad y paso la mayor parte de mi tiempo en frente de mi computadora, me gustaría tener otra vez el bosque. Supongo que la hierba es siempre más verde al otro lado, pero los abetos son árboles de hoja perenne!
Mi compañero de cuarto estaría de acuerdo en que paso mucho tiempo en el escritorio. Evito las fiestas y prefiero cocinar para mis amigos. You are living in Leipzig, was you born there?
I was born in the woods, a small village surrounded by dense fir forest. I hated it a lot when I went through puberty and always dreamed about the big city. Now that I live in a city and spend most of my time in front of my computers, I dream about the forest again. Guess the grass is always greener on the other side, but fir trees are evergreens!
My roommate would probably agree that I spend too much time at my desk. I avoid parties and prefer cooking for my friends.
¿Cómo empezaste con romka?
Cuando empecé romka como revista online en el 2008, las publicaciones de fotografía fueron apareciendo por todas partes. Parecía que todo el mundo estaba empezando un blog, una revista, lo que sea, pero me di cuenta de que todos tenían el mismo enfoque: dar visibilidad a artistas emergentes.
Eran, y todavía son, innumerables revistas en las que todos hacen lo mismo, muestran fotos modernas, gente joven, moderna, fotógrafos jóvenes. Pero eso no es de lo que se trata la fotografía, por lo menos para la mayoría, la gran mayoría de nosotros toma fotos con el fin de conservar un recuerdo valioso, personas que amamos, experiencias que formaron nuestras vidas, es por eso que comencé romka, quería crear una plataforma para las fotografías que realmente significan algo, las imágenes que realmente importan. No otra revista pretensiosa de arte elitista, sino algo real.
How did you started with romka?
When I started romka as an online magazine back in 2008, photography publications were popping up everywhere. It seemed like everybody was starting a blog, zine, whatever -- but I realized that all of them had the same approach: showcasing emerging artists. There were (and still are) countless magazines that all do the very same thing, showing photos of hip, young people, made by hip, young photographers. But that's not what photography is about, at least to most people. The vast majority of us take photos in order to preserve precious memories: people we love and experiences that shaped our lives. So that is why I started romka, I wanted to create a platform for photographs that really mean something, pictures that really matter. Not another pretentious, elitist art magazine, but something real.
¿Algún número te gusta más que otro?
La última edición es siempre mi favorita, y creo que es una buena señal. Si no te empujás con cada nuevo número o proyecto es porque estás yendo para atrás. Cuanto más avergonzado estés con tu trabajo anterior mejor! Significa que estás evolucionando en lo que sea que hagas. La gente a la que todavía le gusta lo que hizo hace 3 años simplemente no están trabajando lo suficiente.
Is there an issue you like most?
The recent issue is always my favorite, and I guess that is a good sign. If you don't push yourself with every new issue / project, you are moving backwards. The more embarrassed you are about your previous work, the better! It only means that you are evolving in whatever it is you do. People who still like what they did 3 years ago are just not working hard enough.
¿Después de tantos años de editar la revista, cuáles creés que son los temas favoritos de la gente que contribuye con sus fotos y textos?
Podés dividirlo tranquilamente entre el amor y la muerte, tan cursi como suena. La mayoría de las historias son acerca de una persona amada o algo que representa a esa persona (un objeto, un lugar, un recuerdo) o acerca de la pérdida de alguien que una vez fue amado. Esto no quiere decir que la persona haya muerto realmente, quizás se trata de un ex amante o un viejo amigo. Pero cuando lo pensás, casi todo en la vida es sobre el amor o la muerte.
After all this years of editing romka, what themes would you say are the favourites for most of the contributors?
You can pretty much divide it into love and death, as cheesy as it sounds.
Most stories are either about a loved person or something that represents that person (an object, a place, a memory..) or about the loss of somebody that once was loved.
That doesn't have to mean that the person actually died, but thinking about an ex lover or an old friend can be very similar. But when you think about, pretty much everything in life is either about love or death.

¿Cuál es el trabajo más difícil de editar un número?
A veces es muy difícil filtrar las presentaciones verdaderas y sinceras. La gente tiende a enviarme sus últimos trabajos, a veces incluso editoriales de moda y cosas así, o hasta inventar historias para hacer que encajen en el concepto de romka. Esto es por supuesto muy molesto. Por otro lado, invitar artistas muy famosos a presentar algo es muy difícil también: si yo hiciera una revista común, lo único que deberían hacer es pedirle a su galerista que manden un archivo Zip con su último trabajo. Para romka, tienen que ir a buscar a sus archivos personales, tal vez escanear una copia vieja, sentarse a escribir algo, es mucho más trabajo para todos los involucrados, siempre tengo que seguir pidiendo y pidiendo. Pero si conseguís personas como Roger Ballen que hacen esto por vos, es por supuesto muy gratificante.
Which is the most hard work of editing an issue of romka?
Sometimes it's very hard to filter out the real, sincere submissions. People tend to send me their recent work, sometimes even fashion editorials and stuff like that, and just make up stories to make it fit into the romka concept. This is of course very annoying. On the other hand, inviting the more famous artists to submit something is really hard as well: if I did a "regular" magazine, all they have to do would be to ask their gallery to send over a ZIP-file of their latest work. For romka, they have to go into their archive, maybe scan an old print, sit down to write something about it.. that is way more work for everybody involved, so I always have to keep asking and asking. But if you get people like Roger Ballen to do this for you, it is of course extremely rewarding.
Pero después de verificar la veracidad o la sinceridad del envío, ¿qué otro criterio decide si va a ser publicada o no?
Quiero que la revista sea tan diversa como sea posible, así que trato de mezclar tantas fotos como sea posible, sin perder un cierto sentimiento que las mantiene a todas juntas.
También es muy importante para mí que la foto y la historia encajan entre sí, pero no se ajustan a la perfección. Me gusta cuando hay un cierto desequilibrio: el texto se trata de algo que no hubiera esperado, la foto se centra en algo que el texto no hace, cosas así. Como una “mala” cantidad de información si te parece.
Romka es básicamente un álbum de fotos colectivo, pero quiero que se sienta como una obra de arte. Supongo que ese es el verdadero reto. Las fotos no tienen que ser "buenas", tienen que funcionar en el contexto de cada número.
After you know the picture and the story are true, real, which other criteria decides is going to be published or not?
I want the magazine to be as diversified as possible, so I try to mix up as many different photos as possible without losing a certain feeling that holds it all together. It's also really important to me that the photo and the story fit together, but don't fit together perfectly. I like it when there is a certain imbalance: the text is about something that you wouldn't have expected, the photo focuses on something other than the text does, things like that. A slightly "wrong" amount of information, if you like. romka is basically a collective photo album, but I want it to feel like a piece of art. I guess that is the real challenge. The photos themselves don't have to be "good", they have to work in the context of the issue.
¿Y qué aprendiste sobre la publicación independiente con romka?
Que la perseverancia es lo más importante. He visto muchas revistas que publican uno o dos números y luego desaparecen por completo. Lleva un tiempo hasta que todo el trabajo que pusiste en un proyecto vale la pena, por lo tanto tenés que mirar a través de él. No hay que esperar hacer un montón de dinero. No hay que enojarse cuando hay proyectos que, en tu opinión, son mucho peores y les prestan más atención. El panorama editorial independiente está lleno de buena gente, así que no pienses en ellos como competidores, sino como una red global de personas a las que les gustan las mismas cosas que a vos!
What have you learned about independent publishing since you work with romka?
That perseverance is the most important thing. I've seen many magazines that published one or two issues and then just disappeared completely. It takes a while until all the work you put into a project pays off, so you just have to sit through it. Don't expect to make a lot of money. Don't be mad when projects that, in your opinion, are way worse than what you do get more attention. The independent publishing scene is full of great people, so don't think of them as competitors, but as a global network of people who like the same things as you do!
¿Creés que cualquiera puede hacer una foto genial?
Oh, por supuesto. Hacer fotos no es difícil. Saber qué foto vale la pena mostrar, esa es la parte imporante. Ofrecele 10 años de fotos de vacaciones a un buen editor o curador y va a generar algo que simplemente te va a hacer explotar emocionalmente.
Do you think anyone can take a wonderful picture? Oh, absolutely. Taking photos is not hard. Knowing which photo is worth showing, that's the imporant part. Give 10 years of casual holiday photos to a good editor / curator and he / she will produce something that will just blow you away emotionally.
¿Me contarías cuál es la historia detrás de tu foto favorita?
Una de mis padres, de la boda de mis padres en 1979. Se casaron en invierno porque era más barato, nunca tuvimos mucho dinero. A medida que fui creciendo me di cuenta de que estaban siempre luchando por pagar la educación de mis hermanas y la mía, por nuestras modestas vacaciones y así sucesivamente. Me enseñaron que no se necesita mucho para estar contento en la vida, que es una cualidad de la cual me siento muy orgulloso. Me alegro de que me educaron para ser una persona que no se preocupa por la ropa de lujo, coches o lo que sea. Si conociera a mis padres hoy en día seguramente andaría por ahí con ellos.
Would you please tell me the story behind your favorite picture?
One of my parents' wedding in 1979. They married in winter, because it was cheaper and we never had a lot of money. As I got older, I realized that they were always struggeling to pay for my two sisters' and my education, for our modest vacations and so on. They thaught me that you don't need much to be content in life, which is a quality that I'm very proud of. I'm glad that they brought me up to be a person who doesn't care about fancy clothes, cars or whatever. If I met my parents today, I would totally hang out with them.
