Ekta. Fragile structures
Questions: Flavio Affonso

I was walking through a vast wasteland, there were all sorts of things thrown, left, chairs, chandeliers, mountains of scrap that formed amphitheatres and suddenly I find a person drawing on the only wall that was still standing, so I approach and he says:

People are used with an unhuman perfection and I believe that beauty lies in the small unavoidable faults which appears when one seeks this perfection with the hand, the lines can never be complete straight and the colour never completely plane. I prefer to paint outdoors, because of the paints ephemeral quality. Sometimes it is gone already the next day, in other cases it is left there for years although being broken down little by little by rain and wind as to disappear completely in the end.

Have you always draw? Siempre dibujaste?
Yes! as far back as I can remember I've been interested in drawing, I used to make little books with some kind of narrative and also my mom used to buy me a2 papers and pens and I would sit for hours filling the paper with characters and letters. I don't think I was even that good but I really enjoyed it and I think it was the only time I found it easy to be still for longer periods of time. As I got a little older I liked MAD and especially Don Martin, so I was into drawing his characters. I have earlier memories of enjoying to ink my older brothers hand writing, I would get stacks of his school books and just fill everything he'd written in pencil with a pen. In my teens I got into swedish comic artists like Max Andersson and Gunnar Lundqvist.

I wrote to Ekta and Daniel answered... What is the difference between Ekta and Daniel?

Im a pretty private kind of person and Im not so comfortable being in the center of attention and working under a pseudonym is good in that aspect. I've always been quite disgusted by what levels some people will go to in order to get personal fame, Im happy if people are interested in my work, my identity is not a big secret but I prefer the focus to be on the stuff I make.

How was your journey from painting in the streets to show at galleries? What have you earned and lost on this trip?

I've tried to stay out of situations where I have to compromise on my ideals or my work, so I can't say that I've really suffered that much or 'lost' anything because of exhibitions. I made a couple of mistakes early on and learned a lot from them. I like doing both but I still prefer to paint walls.. I feel I have a pretty good balance between what I should do and what I want to do, spring is here and I try to take a day a week to go out painting some abandoned building. It's good to have both, I spend most of the winters in the studio preparing stuff for galleries and when the snow is gone it's great to spend time working outdoors, and it's totally ephemeral as opposed to what I do for the exhibitions.

How is your process of work, where does the drawings starts, do you sketch them before, you have the entire drawing in your head, do you find the drawing while you are drawing...?

Most of the time I start with something vague, like a few basic shapes for the general composition and then just draw until something interesting appears, at that point I might stop and have a think about what direction to take things but sometimes I just keep drawing without thinking too much. Working this way means that for every good drawing there could be something like 3-4 crap ones. I'ts very rare that I will have a drawing in my head before I put pen to paper, I prefer to know as little as possible in advance, too keep me interested in the process.

What kind of work you love most?

I think I've been leaning more towards painting recently, I've been enjoying it as much as drawing in the past but right now I would say painting! Like working on canvas as it's a slow process, but I would'nt enjoy it as much if I did'nt paint more improvised quick stuff outdoors. So, the work I love the most right now is painting outdoor walls.

How do you deal with personal work Vs. commissioned work? Or there is no deal between them?
Cómo te manejás con trabajos personales Vs trabajos encargados? O no hay ningún problema entre ellos?

If I feel i have to compromise too much I won't do the project as I know that if I don't enjoy the process the result will be shit and it's just not worth it. I've done 2 public installations in the last year that were commissioned and when I approach projects like that I have to do more thorough sketches and planning than I normally would, as you need to give the client an idea of what the the final piece will be like. Doing editorial illustration is the most different from my personal work process though , as you have a text to work with, I find this challenging in a good way as it's a really different approach to my usual process of drawing or image making, it can be quite hard but I really enjoy it and would like to do more of it in the future.

I love the way you draw the relation between things and people, they seems to be in an ephemeral balance, on stress. It's something you look for or only my impression?

Yes it's something I can relate to for sure but its part of what I've been building up to without thinking too much about it. Right now Im into painting fragile structures, built by objects in a way that won't last long. The transission between subjects is quite a slow process for me and I tend to repeat a theme and alter small things until I find a way into something new.

The figures are real person or imaginary people you draw? Las figuras que dibujás son personas reales?
They are pure fiction, but then again sometimes you end up doing something that has a strong characteristic of a person you might have seen or know. Also as I mentioned before in regards to process, often there is a moment when you have some options or a lead to follow that will define the final character. But it's pretty rare that I get directly inspired by a face or an everyday situation, Im sure these things have some kind of affect on my work but I can't say in what way.

Have you ever drawn a self portrait? Alguna vez dibujaste un autorretrato?
I have'nt done one in a few years, the last time I think was in 2009. It was a painting that was in Spain for an exhibition and got lost in the airport when a friend of mine was taking it back to Sweden, I liked that painting but in the end Im happy it's lost. I think all in all I might have done 5 self portraits in my adult life and I think that most were just awful drawings.

What are you working on now? En qué estás trabajando ahora?
I've had a quiet period for a few weeks as I'm just about done with a big public installation/painting for a library in a place called Trollhattan in Sweden and in the next couple of months I have 2 outdoor group exhibitions and a trip to Wroclaw in Poland to paint a wall.
