If some people wouldn’t live so far away… (How far are we from Stockholm? And even if we would be there ¿How much would we have to know this person to understand what he sees and see what he’s doing?)

Let me tell you your drawings are quite impressive. Would you tell me who are you?
Dejame decirte que tu trabajo es impresionante. Me contás quién sos?

Thank you! I am very glad to hear that you like my work.
I’m 34 years old and I live in Stockholm, Sweden. I have 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
None of them are artists, but my youngest sister, who is 21, is helping me shoot a video that I am working on right now. She’s a very talented photographer so I am trying to encourage her to keep taking pictures.
Anyway, I live with my girlfriend just outside the centre of Stockholm and my studio is about 15 minutes away.

Tengo 34 años y vivo en Estocolmo, Suecia. Tengo 2 hermanos y 4 hermanas. Ninguno de ellos es artista, pero mi hermana menor, que tiene 21, me está ayudando a grabar un video que estoy haciendo. Es una fotógrafa muy talentosa entonces estoy tratando de alentarla a que siga tomando fotos.
De todas formas, vivo con mi novia en las afueras del centro de Estocolmo y mi estudio está a unos 15 minutos de distancia.

What would a friend of yours tell about you?
¿Qué diría sobre vos un amigo tuyo?

If you would ask my friends, I think that everyone would say that I work a lot. I always have a deadline and when I’m not working I am searching for things that will inspire me. My girlfriend is very supporting and patient.

Si le preguntaras a mis amigos creo que todos te dirían que trabajo mucho. Siempre tengo una fecha de entrega y cuando no estoy trabajando estoy buscando cosas que me inspiren. Mi novia me apoya mucho y es muy paciente.

What is that video you are working on?
¿De qué se trata ese video en el que estás trabajando?

The video is called "Frequency". The idea is to make a video that shows me while I'm working on my upcoming exhibition at Gothenburg Art Museum.
But I won't be showing any paintings or drawings - or even my face. All you see is my hands stretching the canvases, sharpening pencils, cleaning up, moving things, etc.
I wanted to show the work that is never seen, all the work that surrounds the artwork. In a sense; the work of which there is no proof.

El video se llama Frecuencia. La idea es hacer un video que me muestre cuando estoy trabajando para mi próxima muestra en el Museo de Arte de Gothemburg.
Pero no voy a mostrar mis dibujos o mis pinturas, ni siquiera mi cara. Todo lo que se ve son mis manos estirando los lienzos, afilando los leapices, limpiando, moviendo cosas, etc.
Quiero mostrar el trabajo que nunca se ve, todo el trabajo que rodea a la obra. En un sentido, el trabajo sobre el que no hay pruebas.

Have you always draw? What do you remember from primary school?
¿Siempre dibujaste? Qué te acordás de la escuela primaria?

Yes, I have always been making pictures, ever since I was about 5 years old. Back in school I was always the “best” at drawing.
Sí, siempre he estado haciendo imágenes, desde que tenía 5 años. En la escuela era el mejor dibujando.

When did you realize you will draw for living? There was someone who encourage you to draw?
¿Y cuándo te diste cuenta que ibas a dedicarte a dibujar, hubo alguien que te alentó para que lo hagas?

Perhaps my mother encouraged me a bit, but I think it was mostly me who just kept making pictures because they fascinate me. I don’t know why really, but it was never a choice for me to become an artist – I knew all along that I was going to be one.

Quizás mi madre me alentó un poco, pero creo que fui yo quien principalmente siguió haciendo imágenes porque me fascinaban. No sé muy bien por qué, pero nunca fue una posibilidad que me convierta en artista, supe desde siempre que iba a ser uno.

Do you draw looking at the scenes, or you imagine the scene?
¿Dibujás mirando las escenas o te las imaginás?

I do a lot of research for my paintings and drawings. Most of the time I will find 2 or 3 photos that each has a small area which interests me.

Investigo mucho para mis pinturas y dibujos. La mayoría de las veces encuentro 2 o 3 fotos que cada una tiene una pequeña parte que me interesa.

Contame un poco más

For example, one of the pictures will have some furniture (tables, chairs etc.) that I like. Next picture will have some books that I want to use, and in the third one I might be interested in the light.
So all of my work is made up of several photos, and sometimes I will even see something in my studio that I will put in the painting (maybe some papers on the floor).

Por ejemplo, una de las imágenes puede tener un mueble (mesas, sillas, etc) que me gusta. La próxima imagen puede tener algunos libros que quiero usar, y de la tercera quizás me interese la luz.
Por lo tanto, todo mi trabajo está hecho a partir de diversas fotos, y a veces también veo algo de mi estudio que pongo en la pintura (quizás algunos papeles del piso)

Do you have some examples of those diferents areas?
¿Tenés algún ejemplo de esas diversas áreas?

I have been searching my computer but I cannot find any examples. A lot of the times I throw away these pictures when I am done with them.

Estuve revisando mi computadora pero no pude encontrar ningún ejemplo. Muchas veces tiro las imágenes una vez que terminé con ellas.

It’s ok, doesn’t matters. Would you please describe a common day of your life?
Está bien, no te preocupes, me contás un día común de tu vida?

I get up at 06:00-06:30, take a shower and then ride my bike to the studio (or I will take the subway, if it’s cold outside).
Hopefully I am there around 07:30. Then I make some coffee, start up the computer and check my email, read something in The New York Times, look for some pictures etc.
At 09:00 I start working with paper (drawings, watercolor or paper sculptures).
After lunch, 11:30, I start working with my paintings until 18:00. Then I clean my brushes and do some exercise. After that I might do some work on the computer again and then I head home to have dinner with my girlfriend.

Me levanto a las 6, 6.30, tomo una ducha y después voy en bicicleta al estudio (o tomo el subte si hace mucho frío afuera)
Con suerte estoy allá cerca de las 7.30. Preparo un poco de café, enciendo mi computadora y chequeo mi mail, leo algo en el New York Times, busco algunas imágenes, etc.
A las 9 empiezo a trabajar en papel (dibujos, acuarelas o esculturas en papel).
Después del almuerzo, a las 11.30, empiezo a trabajar con mis pinturas hasta las 18. Después limpio los pinceles y hago algo de ejercicio. Después puedo hacer algo de trabajo en la computadora nuevamente y después voy a casa para cenar con mi novia.

Would you tell me about the paper sculptures.
Me contás de las esculturas en papel?

Sometimes I just feel like doing something else. In this case I figured out a way to cut and fold a piece of paper into some steps. I guess it's some kind of origami. I just do it for fun and I feel that I need to give my brain some exercise sometimes.

A veces me dan ganas de hacer algo distinto. En este caso busqué una forma de cortar y doblar un papel en algunos escalones. Creo que es una clase de origami. Lo hago simplemente por diversión, y porque siento que le tengo que dar un poco de ejercicio a mi cerebro a veces.

I love reading books.
Right now I have just finished reading “Ruhm” by Daniel Kehlmann and I have started reading The Gonzo Papers: Anthology” by Hunter S. Thompson and “Smiley’s People” by John Le Carré.
I also love the work of Jorge Luis Borges, he’s from Argentina right?

It seems to be a kind of relation between caos, lack of human beings, and a dramatic misse in scene of the moments you draw. Is this real or it’s just my point of view?

Parece que hay una especie de relación entre el caos, la ausencia de seres humanos y una puesta en escena dramática en las situaciones que dibujás. ¿Es algo real o es solamente mi punto de vista?

Yes, I am very interested in chaos vs. order. I think that the nature of the human mind is a very chaotic space, and that we are constantly trying to make sense and organize all our impressions and thoughts.
One way of looking at it is that we are existing at the verge of chaos and all our efforts are put into keeping things in order.

Sí, me interesa mucho el caos vs. el orden. Creo que la mente del ser humano es un espacio muy caótico, y que estamos siempre tratando de darle sentido y organizando todas nuestras impresiones y pensamientos.
Una forma de verlo es que existimos al borde del caos y que todos nuestros esfuerzos están puestos en mantener las cosas en orden.

Would you please send me a photo of your studio?
¿Me mandarías una foto de tu estudio?

Looking at your studio and your paintings, It seems you are wining the battle against caos.
Mirando tu estudio y tus pinturas, parece que le estás ganando la batalla al caos.

What can you tell me about human relations showed on your paintings?
¿Qué me podés decir sobre las relaciones humanas que se muestran en tus dibujos?

To me, the humans in my work are there because they are doing things. They are moving boxes, reading papers, typing, organizing, examining things and so on. I put them there to explain how the objects are used. This also make the objects more important.

Para mí, los humanos en mi trabajo están ahí porque están haciendo cosas.. Están moviendo cajas, leyendo papeles, tipeando, organizando, examinando cosas y así. Los pongo ahí para explicar cómo son usados los objetos. Esto hace que los objetos sean más importantes.

So what objects are most important to you, or your favorites ones?
¿Y qué objetos son importantes para vos, o tus favoritos?

I would say sheets of paper. A blank sheet of paper equals possibilities. Both in a physical as well as metaphorical sense.

Yo diría hojas de papel. Una hoja de papel en blanco iguala las posibilidades. Tanto materialmente como en un sentido metafórico.

How much time are you with a drawing like Illumination, for example?
¿Cuánto tiempo estás con un dibujo como Illumination, por ejemplo?

I always work on a lot of paintings at the same time, so it’s hard to tell, but I would say maybe 3-4 weeks. If it’s a large painting it will take much longer.

Siempre trabajo en muchas pinturas al mismo tiempo, es difícil de decir, pero diría que entre 3 y 4 semanas tal vez. Si es una pintura de mayor tamaño mucho más.

If you know Argentina, you would love our bureaucracy and our state buildings full of people who don’t know what are they doing. Would it be a great scene to draw?

Si conocés la Argentina te encantaría nuestra burocracia y nuestros edificios estatales llenos de personas que no saben lo que están haciendo. ¿Sería una buena escena para dibujar?

That’s very funny! I have never been to Argentina, but that sounds like something that I would like!

Eso es muy divertido, nunca estuve en la Argentina, pero suena como algo que me gustaría!
