Hace más de un año me encontré con una de sus fotos (ésta de arriba), fui a su flickr y desde ese momento quedé prendado de la intimidad con la que muestra su mundo cercano.
Pensé que era fotógrafa, después vi su site y descubrí que era diseñadora de mobiliario, pero después me encontré con sus dibujos. ¿Qué dice sobre sí misma? ANA KRAS nació en Belgrado, Serbia, en Julio de 1984. Ana trabaja en diferentes proyectos personales y por encargo. No dudes en ponerte en contacto. Entonces le mandé un mail.
Meanwhile this talks she was knitting those chandeliers, publishing a book with pictures she took last summer in Oregon and California, setting up a new photo-series site, showing her lamps on Young Sebian Designers at Milano, contributing with several images on diferent editions, publishing a photo project-zine, and she also had enough time to show me what she sees and tell me what she is doing. Mientras mantuvimos esta charla estuvo cosiendo esas lámparas colgantes, publicando un libro con las fotografías que tomó el verano pasado en Oregon y California, armando un nuevo site de series de fotos, yendo con sus lámparas a la muestra de Jovenes Diseñadores Serbios en Milán, contribuyendo con sus fotos en diversas ediciones, publicando un fanzine de fotos, y teniendo el tiempo suficiente para mostrarme lo que ve y contarme lo que está haciendo.
What can you tell me about yourself?
¿Qué me podés decir de vos?
I was born and I'm still based in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. I finished the university of applied arts some years ago and since then I am working on different projects. Lately I am focusing more on furniture design, but I also draw and take photographs.
Nací y sigo viviendo en Belgrado, la capital de Serbia. Terminé Artes Aplicadas en la universidad algunos años atrás y desde entonces estoy trabajando en diferentes proyectos. Ultimamente me estoy enfocando más en diseño de mobiliario, pero también dibujo y tomo fotografías.
Ksilofon is a clothing rack made in wood - oak sticks and plywood panels.
Clothing stand is an object often used by young people, students, people living in small spaces and moving a lot. This project was initiated by my friends who asked me to design a simple wooden stand - cheap and easy to be made.
Bonbon is a family of LAMPS, colorful strings knitted manually over steel wire shape
cotton that will be used for making prototypes is a leftover from a previous collection of a knitwear company called Ivko-knits.
Hive lamp is a floor, standing version of bonbons lamp.
The body is made of oak wood and the lamp shade is made of coated steel wire and cotton strings. The shade is hung on the wooden console with cottong strings. The position of the console and the height of the lamp can be changed by adjusting the cord.
The lamp shade of the hive lamp is one of the shades from the bonbon lamps family.

What is your most loved furniture of your house?
¿Cuál es el mueble que más te gusta de tu casa?
I’m renting a nice flat, a typical belgrade socialistic architecture from early 70ies, parquet, a many windows. I don't have a lot of furniture, only handmade basics. My favorite is a bedside cabinet I took from my grandmother's apartment after she died. It's a beautiful piece, lightgray, with dark wooden legs. I also love my blue old working lamp.
Estoy alquilando un lindo piso, arquitectura socialista de los principios de los 70’s típico de Belgrado, parquet, muchas ventanas. No tengo muchos muebles, solamente los básicos, hechos a mano. Mi favorito es una mesa de luz que traje del departamento de mi abuela después de que falleció. Es una pieza hermosa, en gris claro con patas de madera negra. También amo mi vieja lámpara azul de trabajo.
You run several projects about photography, furniture design, publishing, drawing, how did you started, and what do you like about those projects you are involved?
Llevás adelante muchos proyectos sobre fotografía, diseño de mobiliario, edición, dibujo. ¿Cómo comenzaste y qué te gusta de los proyectos en los que estás participando?
It’s nice to do different things, I’m happiest that way. All those different fields and different projects are making me happy. Earlier I thought I will one day need to focus on one thing to be able to give some real results, but lately I realised it's not necessarily the case and that I cannot force myself to stick to one field if I am curious about different things.
Es bueno hacer cosas distintas. Soy más feliz de esta forma. Todas esas disciplinas y proyectos diferentes me están poniendo contenta. Antes pensaba que iba a tener que enfocarme en una cosa para ser capaz de dar algún resultado importante, pero ultimamente me di cuenta de que no es necesario y de que no me puedo forzar a pegarme a un solo campo si soy curiosa sobre diversas cosas.¿Me contás un día común, desde que te levantás hasta que te vas a dormir?
The truth is that there is no common day, since I am a freelance. My only constant in my life is my oatmeal breakfast. :) but I can tell you about today.
I woke up around 09.30. I ate my typical breakfast - oatmeal with raspberries and vanilla. after I went to the open-air market and bought some vegetables. Then I was doing illustrations for a book of an italian writer (i am currently doing 30 illustrations for that book). I am quite stressed about it because the deadline is very close and it's a big work. Today I drew an architect with a pigeon head. After I cocked and then I ate. answered some mails, and around midnight had a friend over cos his bicycle tire broke close to my place, and he came to leave it here. Then we had a late walk, it's summer warm outside. Now I am on my bed answering these questions again, cos I did it days ago and forgot to save the file.
Me levanté a eso de las 9.30. Comí mi desayuno típico, - avena con frambuesas y vainilla – después fui al mercado al aire libre y compré algunos vegetales. Después estuve haciendo dibujos para un libro de un escritor italiano (estoy haciendo 30 dibujos para ese libro) Estoy un poco estresada con eso porque la fecha límite está cerca y es un trabajo grande. Hoy dibujé un arquitecto con cabeza de paloma. Después cociné y comí. Contesté algunos mails y cerca de la medianoche vino un amigo porque se rompió su bicicleta cerca de mi casa y la trajo para dejarla acá. Después nos hicimos un paseo tardío, afuera está cálido el verano. Ahora estoy en la cama contestando estas preguntas nuevamente, porque lo hice algunos días atrás pero me olvidé de grabar el archivo.
Do you have some sketch drawings or some drawings you made only to enjoy doing it?
¿Tenés algunos bocetos, o algunos dibujos que hacés solamente por gusto?
Casi todos mis dibujos son así, simplemente como una escritura de algo que tengo en la cabeza.

I was riding my bicycle through Spinea, a small town in north Italy and then I saw a luna-park that was all empty and I was walking around and I noticed a plastic gun on the floor, I took it and then I noticed a matching wall painting. Estaba andando en bicicleta a través de Spinea, un pequeño pueblo del norte de Italia cuando vi un parque de diversiones completamente vacío, estaba caminando por ahí y encontré una pistola de plástico en el piso, tomé la foto y después me di cuenta que la pintura en la pared hacía juego
We were in this bar somewhere in Oregon, by the road, drinking beers, later that night the rockabilly band was playing so good.
Estábamos en este bar en algún lugar de Oregon, al costado de la ruta, tomando cerveza, más tarde esa noche la banda de rockabilly sonaba tan bien.
It's ingrid in Oregon, I remember we were making barbecue and getting free haircuts from Matt. Es Ingrid en Oregon, me acuardo que estábamos haciendo una barbacoa y teniendo cortes de pelo gratis de Matt.
Do you always carry a photo camera in your bag?
¿Siempre llevás la cámara en el bolso?
Oh no I don't take many pictures and I don't carry my camera everywhere. I get confused with too many pictures, and I also sometimes have weeks without taking a single picture.
Oh, no, no tomo tantas fotos, y no siempre llevo la cámara a todos lados, Me confunden tantas fotos, a veces tengo semanas enteras sin tomar una sóla foto.
There is some moment in which you would never take a picture?
¿Hay algún momento en el que nunca tomarías una foto?
Algunos momentos son buenos para ser vistos una sóla vez, con los ojos.

Some days ago I was with my friends, I was playing some pathetic music and they all start to dance synchronised and did a beautiful coreography.
In a way I was happy I didn't have my camera so I was just excited watching them not thinking about the pictures.
De algún modo estaba contenta, no tenía mi cámara entonces solamente estaba emocionada mirándolos sin pensar en las fotos.
It seems you photograph what happens around you, what do you watch in people you photograph?
Parece que fotografías lo que pasa a tu arlededor, ¿qué mirás en las personas a las que fotografiás?

Are there some photos you don’t show? Some private ones?
¿Hay fotos que no mostrás, fotos privadas?
There are some. But I don't have anything against very personal photos. I love personal photos. And I think at the same time they become impersonal because the contex changes and the way you put them together. I like how personal pictures become universal because they always illustrate an universal emotion, and people on pictures are not important anymore.
Hay algunas, pero no tengo nada en contra de las fotos muy personales. Amo las fotos personales. Y pienso que al mismo tiempo se vuelven impersonales porque cambia el contexto y cómo las ordenás juntas. Me gusta cómo las fotos personales se vuelven universales porque siempre muestran una emoción universal, y las personas en las fotos ya no importan más.
Do you like reading? Is there a book you liked most?

I love to read and I don't have a favourite book. I love 'The reader' written by Bernhard Schlink.

What do you remember about your chillhood?
¿Qué te acordás de tu infancia?
Many things. I remember my father's car - the old land rover, and the trips we did in it in summer, roofless. I remember my older sister secretly shaving her head.
Muchas cosas. Me acuerdo del auto de mi papá – el viejo land rover – y los viajes que hicimos en él en verano, sin techo, me acuerdo de mi hermana mayor afeitándose la cabeza en secreto.
Can you tell me a short story about hollidays in photographs?

Is there a discipline you haven’t touch yet that you want to work with?
¿Hay alguna disciplina que no hayas tocado todavía y con la que te gustaría trabajar?
Would love to make realistic sculptures and to learn to play piano, or a violin. (violin will never happen it's too difficult and I am not talented)
Me encantaría hacer esculturas realistas y aprender a tocar el piano o el violin (el violin nunca sucederá, es demasiado difícil y no tengo talento)
mmm... I don't think so, I'm sure If you try you'll be a great violin player :)
mmm, no creo, estoy seguro que si probás vas a ser una gran violinista :)
How do you see yourself 10 years from now?
¿Cómo te ves dentro de 10 años?
